New Job Board Concentrates on Greater Philadelphia Area

gi_0_0_phillyjobfestlogo

Looking for a job just became easier with the launch of Philly Job Fest, the only job board that is concentrated completely on the greater Philadelphia area.

Jobs will only remain on the site for 30 days, and job posts will automatically be sent to the popular “Tweet My Jobs” service, which in turn relays them to the appropriate channels on Twitter. Users of “Tweet My Jobs” and Twitter can receive instantaneous job alerts on their cell phones based on their job search parameters. Listings on Philly Job Fest will be indexed by the popular job search engine Indeed. Basic Philly Job Fest subscriptions start at $99.

Site founder James Oley said he developed the idea for a new job board after his job search earlier this year led him to sites populated with multi-level marketing scams, investment “opportunities” and an inbox filled with junk mail as a result of creating accounts on various job boards. He found the big job boards too confusing and time consuming, with bells and whistles unnecessary in a legitimate job search.

Philly Job Fest includes counties around greater Philadelphia, such as Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia along with the New Jersey counties of Burlington, Camden and Gloucester.

The job board is different than other sites in that it is easy to navigate, doesn’t have pop-up ads or annoying clutter and only houses the best, most up-to-date job listings. Users can upload their resume and search jobs easily and efficiently.

Employee Confidence Index Virtually Unchanged in March

The Texas Employee Confidence Index remained virtually unchanged in March, rising 0.6 points to 44.7, according to the latest Spherion Employment Report.

The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Spherion Corporation, indicates that as more workers report confidence in the future of their current employers and in their ability to find a new job, fewer workers are optimistic about the number of jobs available.

Results from the Texas Employment Report:

  • Only five percent of workers believe more jobs are available, decreasing three percentage points from February.
  • Sixty-eight percent of Texas workers are confident in the future of their employers, compared to 61 percent in the previous month.
  • Half of Texas workers surveyed are confident in their ability to find a new job. Specifically, 50 percent versus 44 percent in February.

“While Texas is faring better than the nation as a whole, we are still feeling the effects of the economic slowdown, although on a much milder level,” said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. “Many employers are focused on keeping current staff levels, but there are pockets of opportunities out there. Job seekers need to search a little harder to uncover them and present a clear and compelling reason why they can add immediate value to companies. Candidates are going to have to continue to compete against larger numbers of job seekers for fewer openings. It is definitely an employer’s market.”

No Bonus but Lots of Separation Pays

Recession

Christmas time is finally here and most employees are perhaps enjoying their meals and exchanging gifts, two familiar scenes when Yuletide season sinks in. But part of reality is the fact that practically a million workers (and counting) from the globe have lost their jobs, many of whom got their last paycheck in perhaps large sums. With that in mind, should you spend it all?

There are some who have saved as much as they can. Spending on a budget and making sure that they don’t go on empty. Some are planning their 2009 plan of action, much of which is to land a new job by reading the papers or visiting some job sites that provide various posts on job openings.

The people who got bonuses are quite lean this year and this can be typified by the sales of most retailers, a lot of whom admitted dwindled a lot. So while we don’t want to ruin Christmas, keep that thought that a week from now, 2009 is here. Draw out your career plans. The Year of the Ox does not seem bright thus far.
