Cutting down on Dividends and Executive Bonuses

Aug.03, 2008 in Business Administration, Career, Financing

Executives

When a company makes a profit, there are generally only a few things they do with that profit in normal economic times. Either the profit goes into the pockets of the executives as bonuses for a job well done or it goes into the hands of the shareholders through dividend payments. Now, most companies know to stop dividend payments in times of economic hardship, but there are very few companies that will take the next logical step and cut down on the salaries of the executives in order to preserve the overall health of the corporation.

In theory, this is quite understandable as the people that make those decisions would have to consciously choose to pay themselves less money in order to benefit a lot of people that they don’t even know. Layoffs are far more logical from the point of view of the executives. However, consider that layoffs will not only make your company far less productive, but they will also exacerbate problems with the economy as there will be less people in the position to be consumers since they have lost their disposable income sources.

It takes a special kind of person to understand that workers keeping their jobs is the best thing for the economy right now and it takes an even better kind of executive leader to make the conscious decision to limit executive bonuses until economic times are good again. You might resist this idea initially, but when you examine it closely you will see the logic to the idea.

Maintenance in the Present Saves Money in the Future

Jul.26, 2008 in Business Administration, Financing

This is the first tip that you can use to help save money and run your business in these troubled times. In many ways, this is perhaps the most obvious tip that anyone could give and for that reason it is also the least used one. That combination makes this a very good place to start.

Saving Money

Because economic downturns in countries like the United States tend to come unexpectedly at the end of periods of unbelievable prosperity, it is not that uncommon to find people overextended in their business exercises at the time. For that reason, maintaining current infrastructure usually takes a back seat to replacing it but if you want your business to get through the tough times then you need to work with what you have and make it last longer.

Maintaining an expensive piece of infrastructure such as a desktop computer costs a fraction of what purchasing a new one would over the same period of time because it allows the computer to last longer. This allows you to save money at best or at worst it allows you to prolong the purchase of the new unit as far into the future as possible, making it more likely that financial times will be better when you make the purchase.

Drawbacks to Carpooling

Carpooling

Carpooling is a great way to deal with the immediate problems of the rising price of gas. It is also a great way to transition from primarily driving to work to primarily telecommuting to work. However, when push comes to shove it is not a permanent solution to the problem because of the numerous drawbacks that carpooling brings to the table.

The most obvious drawback is that the route you drive in carpooling is longer and dependent on where your other carpooling members happen to live. If a particular business wants to put up a map and spend the time to help employees find people that live close to them then that is good, but most businesses have no interest in doing that. And for some employees, there are no people that live close to them. Therefore, carpooling is nothing more than a short term solution for most employees in the country.

Telecommuting on the other hand allows you to spend no money on commuting beyond the money you spend accessing the internet everyday in order to be able to communicate with the people you work for. It is therefore a long term solution that can help you defeat the energy crisis problem before it begins something that threatens your basic cash flow concerns.

Alternatives to Telecommuting

No More Rush Hours in Telecommuting

For some reason, the mental block that a lot of people seem to have with telecommuting is a strong one and for that reason many people have been looking for alternatives to telecommuting. As some that telecommutes to work all the time, I don’t particularly understand the objections to it, but I dutifully tried to examine the problem in order to see if any alternatives were available.

Off the top of my head, the only other viable alternative I could think of was sleeping over at the office. If people brought a week’s worth of clothing with them and had access to a shower close to their office, they could conceivably sleep over at the office from Monday night to Thursday night, coming home on Friday in order to spend the weekend with their family. This would cut down their weekly fuel consumption by 80% (they would still need to commute one-way on Monday morning and Friday evening) and ostensibly save them a lot of money in the process.

Personally, I think that as a solution this is nowhere near as good as telecommuting. Telecommuting allows you to spend all of your evenings with your family and it allows you to be around for family emergencies that might happen. It brings families together rather than forcing them apart and for these reasons and more is simply a much better solution to a person’s current gasoline woes.

Finding Your Second Career

Career switching is something that most of us should be familiar by this time. Normally we start out as salesmen or clerks only to find ourselves wanting something more.

Salespeople would normally be expected to do field work, giving them the luxury of managing their time while looking for potent clients and business opportunities. However, it may also come to a point where you would burn yourself out and want a simple office job.

On the other hand, office workers would come to a point to want a change of scenery. Go outside and see the world why working may be their demand. As far as these issues are concerned, you cannot have them both.

But today, if you are witty enough, you can find ways to satisfy both worlds. Actually some even make good money multitasking and maintaining both jobs.

Here is a good video to show you the people who have successfully managed them and how you can do it yourself.
