Healthy foods help your body function by providing energy, strengthening immunity, and improving your ability to stay fit and active. Everyone at least once has been told to eat a well-balanced diet, eat sensibly. A balanced diet refers to intake of appropriate types and adequate amounts of foods and drinks to supply nutrition and energy for the maintenance of body cells, tissues, and organs, and to support normal growth and development

Good nutrition simply means to eat sensibly by eating foods that contain all the vitamins, minerals, and other things you need to keep your body fit and strong and not be overweight. To eat sensibly means eating the right foods from the basic food groups that contain fruit and vegetables; protein foods, bread and cereal foods, and the last food group are the dairy products. A well-balanced diet acts to provide sources of energy and nutrition for optimal growth and development.

To eat sensibly and achieve a balanced diet, you should eat at least 3 meals each day, try not to skip breakfast, and consume a variety of foods from each of the food groups daily from the list below. 

  1. The first food group contains fruits and vegetable. You should eat four servings of fruits and vegetables daily. These foods that you can eat are salads, cooked vegetables, raw or cooked fruits and juices. These supply many of the vitamins and minerals your body needs. To eat sensibly from this food group would be a piece of fruit or raw vegetable, a half a cup of cooked vegetable or fruit juice.
  2. The second group contains protein foods. You should eat three servings or more daily of meats, fish, poultry, eggs and cheese. They give you the protein as well as a lot of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs. To eat sensibly from this food group would be two ounces of meat, fish, chicken or turkey. An ounce would be a slice of ham or turkey. A chicken leg has about two ounces of meat and a hamburger patty has three ounces. For breakfast, two eggs or two slices of cheese and for vegetables one cup of cooked string beans or peas. A typical snack would be a thin coating of peanut butter on a slice of bread.
  3. The third group contains breads and cereals. Most of these cereals or breads have a variety of bowl of cereal, a half a cup of noodles, macaroni, or rice. Spaghetti for dinner would be considered as two or more servings. To eat sensibly for breakfast you could eat one pancake, waffle, or slice of corn bread as for  one serving.  

Overall to eat sensibly you should pick foods from the above list, avoid junk foods, don’t skip meals, and listen to your body when it is full and do not eat anything more. Having a healthy diet and to eat sensibly will help you to remain alert, be relaxed and feel your best.
