When it comes to ag careers, you may have heard of “farmer,” “rancher” and “grower.”

But have you ever heard of a viticulturist? That’s a grape-growing expert. Duties of the viticulturist include controlling pests and diseases, fertilizing, irrigation, canopy management, monitoring fruit development and characteristics, deciding when to harvest and vine pruning during winter. How about an aquaculturist? That’s someone in charge of maintaining fish ponds and related equipment.

Those are just a couple of the interesting careers that help the ag industry stay in business. And just how big is that business?

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the direct value added contributed by agriculture, natural resources, and related food and service industries ($58.62 billion) represents 8.2 percent of Florida’s gross state product.

Let’s take a look at a few lesser-known ag careers that help comprise this major industry.

Kevin Kenworthy is a University of Florida professor and turfgrass breeder who became interested in grasses as a teenager while playing golf and working on the courses.

“At that time, I decided that I wanted to learn how to make new grasses,” he said.

While in college, he took courses in botany and plant breeding. In between his studies, Kenworthy became employed in the sod production industry.

“To be a turf breeder, one must have an interest, understanding and knowledge in environmental issues, turfgrass management, plant taxonomy and biology of grasses (the field of agrostology) and other industry-related issues,” said Kentworthy.

To be a lead investigator requires a Ph.D., while most positions require at least a master’s degree. The job market is small.

“There are between 20 and 30 turfgrass breeding positions across the U.S.,” which includes private, public, and warm and cool season jobs, said Kenworthy.

Debbie Wyatt-Stotter is an award-winning rosarian, or a rose expert. She is a first vice president of the Fort Myers Garden Council and a past president of the Greater Fort Myers Rose Society.

To become an expert on roses, she attended the ARS Deep South District of the American Rose Society’s School for Consulting Rosarians for initial certification and for yearly recertification.

“The most remarkable thing about my position is being able to share knowledge about growing roses with others whenever and wherever possible,” said Wyatt-Stotter, who once had 150 types of roses in her garden.

There are more than 100,000 members who are part of The World Federation of Rose Societies, an affiliation of national rose societies from 40 countries. Rosarians can work as consultants for growers, nurseries and organizations.

Eileen Buss of UF’s department of entomology and nematology is a professor and entomologist (a scientist specializing in insects), who started off studying zoology and German at Michigan State University. As an outdoors lover, she became intrigued with insects.

Her task as an entomologist is to help with insect control from an environmentally friendly standpoint.

“Insect pest management specialists help people responsibly control insect pests in and around their homes and businesses, and help people in agriculture and urban pest or landscape management adopt more environmentally friendly control strategies,” said Buss, who enjoys telling people she gets paid to play in the dirt and collect bugs.

To become a university faculty member in the entomology department, or a USDA researcher, one needs a Ph.D. in entomology. However, there are still jobs in the industry with master’s degree requirements, such as raising bees, enforcing regulations and surveying for insects.

Jeff Vowell is a forest hydrologist with the Florida Forest Service. Hydrologists works to protect water supplies and water quality for both private and public institutions.

Vowell has a bachelor of arts in forestry and first worked as a forester. Then he decided he liked the hydrology aspect so much that he went on to get a master’s degree in hydrology — a two-year program much like an engineering degree.

“I enjoy implementing research results,” said Vowell, who explained that the job often requires field work, along with researching, which is what he enjoys most.

According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Due to an increased focus in environmental protection for many private firms, there is expected to be a nearly 25 percent increase in hydrology jobs over the next several years, with a large number of these positions involving consulting in the private sector.”

Regardless of what ag career you have or are looking at, you are part of a huge segment of the U.S. economy.

“Roughly 4.1 million people are directly employed in production agriculture as farmers, ranchers and laborers, but the industry directly or indirectly employs approximately one out of six American workers,” according to “American Agriculture’s Cornucopia of Opportunity and Responsibility” (newgeography.com, 2009).
