I had the chance to interview a hospital administrator to get his views on the relevance of the current US crisis with that of the demand for nurses coming from other countries such as the Philippines. He shares his views and the large turnout of local nurses trying to get a job to avoid putting their efforts of taking up nurses for a lost cause.
- In light of the current economic crisis that is befalling the United States, local nurses are bound to flock your company and apply for nursing positions. Can you verify this fact?
Definitely, there have been a lot of newly grad nurses who have applied for possible positions with the company. The problem is, due to their volume, we cannot entertain all of them. Experience is still a must and while we want to accommodate them, we still have able nurses holding key positions that do not need to be replaced at the moment.
- Can you say that the influx of new nurses make it easier for you to undermine the quality of service expected from healthcare organizations?
Absolutely. Right now, each nurse under our wing have to perform above satisfactory to avoid possible relief from their post. It is easier to replace incompetent nurses now since unlike before, they are merely here for experience. Today, they need to ensure better quality of rendering assistance to physicians and medical services since poor quality can get them terminated at the worst scenario.
- Do you feel that their efforts in taking up nursing has gone to waste?
No. It just so happened that they got caught in the economic recession that has hit the U.S. Also, there are countries in need of nurses as well although the selection process may become stiffer and of course they would give due preference to local talent rather than give the job to foreign overseas workers.
- Have you terminated any nurses so far?
In fact, I have replaced 3 nurses for the past month due to lackadaisical attitude and poor performance. Rendering health services is not similar to business operations. You cannot afford to make foul-ups as this would lead to giving the hospital a bad name.
- Do you foresee further dampening of nursing positions abroad.
Yes especially after the elections. Regardless of who wins the U.S. presidency, I am betting that they will hold true to their word in preferring local people to be prioritized as far as employment is concerned. It is really something that is common for any country. Why would you hire foreign talent if you countrymen are left with no choice and willing to take the said “dirty jobs” of rendering service?
Such is a reality today. Nursing was indeed a large demand in years back. But as in demand and supply, it will always reach the peak of it all and the downward trend will suffice. Unfortunately for new nurses today, it is not a gradual decrease but a turnstile occurrence. There will be jobs for them but as far as overseas work is concerned, it just got smaller in terms of demand.

The United States and perhaps the whole world is in recession. With that in mind, other countries like the ones in Europe and Asia are following. While we all know that various means are being resorted to avoid imminent economic catastrophe, you have to wonder how the outsourced jobs such as call centers situated in key areas of the world will deal with it. That is, if they are still around.
Rumor has it that the US is seriously studying pulling out these call centers, particularly in the Philippines and India. Rather than hold fort in these two leading countries where labor is cheaper, they are planning to hold base in their local grounds.
With that in mind, panic and worried call center agents are bracing themselves for the worst. For sure, the smaller ones will be the first to go and incrementally followed by the larger ones. The bigger and successful companies may still be around but make no mistake about it; they will be downsizing.
The unemployment rate is expected to escalate. Call centers have been a goldmine for most people. While many choose to be ignorant, getting over the recession is not the end of it. The next president has vowed that countrymen comes first and with that in mind, you know that local talent will get first priority and this includes jobs circulating around call center and nursing professions.

For most people, especially in the call center industry, you will be surprised at the premium that they put in the words that they make. The harder or high falutin your word is the better. To them it is an act of trying to impress your foreign boss or clients since you are equipped with deeper vocabulary or meaning. Sadly, that is not the case.
Most senior call center agents make it a requirement since they believe it is a sign that they are professionally ready for the job. But I beg to disagree. It is not always the case. In fact, while foreigners love to hear it, the bottom-line is do they understand it? Simplicity in diction is always the best of the two since in communication, do remember that understanding the message is still the main objective.
The bosses or your clients for that matter will not admit it. But while technical words may be used, ask yourself if they appreciate it. Normally you would only get a smile or smirk from them but overall, they may not understand what you are trying to get across.
A lot of people who have become team leaders in call centers like Sykes Asia think that this is impressive. Being a former executive and politician, I could not help but laugh at how people try darn hard to get complicated words to make an impression. I hold a higher education than these guys (most of whom I believe are not graduates), and yet while I can choose to use such high falutin words, I don’t!
I have dealt with foreigners and the simpler you communicate with them the better. In transactions, it is all about understanding and not about using words which you have to look at the dictionary. Using high falutin words (majority of which I bet they don’t even understand if asked what it meant) is impressive but defeats the purpose of effective communication.
Diction is different from deeper vocabulary. Try not to impress you boss or clients with the use of high falutin words. They may just ask you what it means and you may not even be able to describe it instantaneously. So who will look sheepish in the end? The last thing you would want is to be laughed at and believe me, they do!

While most of the world is panicking at the financial disaster that has been ruling the world today, it seems apparent that digging deep in the internal operations of each bank or financial lending institution must be checked as well. Issuing and approving loans lies entirely on the internal credit checks made by independent companies.
So if there is one thing that is needed to help save companies that have not yet bitten the bankrupt bill bullet, check out your credit investigator roster and your credit investigating guidelines. We all blame the borrowing community but in the first place, why approve a loan if they are not capable of paying them in the first place?
The financial bailout plan has made all of these academic. But to avoid future problems, a recall of current credit policy guidelines should be done as well. A change is in order and perhaps this is one overlooked aspect ever since the start of real estate loans were made. The current state we are in was never seen to escalate.
So if there is a career that needs to be checked, better screening and employment of credit investigators to do the right task in approving loans must be done. It may be a simple job, rank and file for most but considering their importance and impact to any financial institution today, we can see the debacle that it has caused from overlooking the actual importance and value of credit investigation departments existing in banks today.
